Gratitude game
What is gratitude
Gratitude is much more than a simple ‘thank you’; it’s a profound appreciation for the people, experiences, and blessings in our lives. It could be represented by a retuning of a smile to somebody who says hello. Or appreciating the beauty of the ocean where you would start Kitesurfing, maybe one day soon. Or even recognizing the accomplishment of who we are, a loving and caring mom, a loving half, friend, a professional, and all at once!
It’s a practice that encourages us to pause, reflect, and acknowledge the good, no matter how small or big. Embracing gratitude can lead to remarkable benefits. It brings a positive mindset, helping to overcome stress and increase resilience. It enhances our connections with others, as acknowledging the value of relationships nurtures deeper bonds. Gratitude also empowers us to celebrate our achievements and the beauty of the journey, not just the destination. By cultivating a habit of gratitude, we can create a more fulfilling, balanced, and joyful life, strengthening both personal well-being and communal ties.
And it’s a great and simple remedy to the Impostor Syndrom.
Bedtime with kids is a Privileged moment
Since they were babies, I used to read bedtime stories to my both kids. The bedtime stories were part of our rituals. And I always cherish this privileged time with them. This is the precious moment where we were fully focused and joyful. And nowadays, my son, 13, and my daughter, 16, still implore me to have this moment with them. Even when I’m tired, busy or have guests at home, I would make myself available for them. And I just love it and feel gratitude that they still ask.
Gratitude game came from a challenging time
However, at the time of separation from their father, we were still residing in Malaysia. The family, couple and kids faced real challenges. The nights were particularly hard for my son, who struggled with sleep since he was a baby. I remember those long hours spent by his side, soothing him until he finally sleeps. The first night he slept through was a mixture of relief and anxiety for me, my heart is never fully at rest. I thought he was no longer breathing as couldn’t hear anything…
It was during these challenging time, that I created a new habit during tender night-time moments. We began our ‘Gratitude Game’. My son was five and my daughter eight, this game became a window into their mind. It was my dear friend Manue who introduced me to this wonderful practice, for which I am eternally grateful.
Every night, as our day reach night time, we would share three things that brought us joy that day. This ritual was not just for my children; it was a balm for my mind too. Sharing my gratitudes helped me to focus on the positive, easing the tensions of the day and preparing me for a restful sleep.
Gratitude, a powerful practice
Gratitude, I’ve learned, is a powerful tool in our daily lives. It teaches us to find joy in the smallest of things. Take, for instance, a simple act of kindness on the road – stopping to let someone cross, and receiving a grateful smile in return. Or even today, the unexpected call from a friend, not seen for while. This friend was in town for a friend’s funeral. That friend was 50, reminding us of the preciousness and brevity of life. These moments, small as they may seem, are the pinches of happiness woven through the fabric of our everyday lives.
I also realized that we have to cherish our time with our loved ones. In their presence, we could always find strength and comfort when needed. It’s only when they are missing that we could realize it. Just take a moment to think about our lives without them, and it will remind how much you that would miss them. The blessings that surround us are often unnoticed in our busy lives.
To our vibrant community, I encourage you to embrace gratitude in your daily lives. It’s a simple practice that can transform our mindset, nurture positivity. And it remind us of the joys and blessings that fill our lives, often in the most unexpected ways.
